MII in 60 seconds

Motor Injury Insurance is WA's compulsory third-party scheme, underwritten entirely by the Insurance Commission of Western Australia and bundled into your vehicle licence. It covers injuries to people — compensation, treatment, care and rehabilitation for those hurt by your vehicle, plus lifetime care for catastrophic injuries even in no-fault crashes. It never covers damage to cars or property: that needs separate comprehensive or third-party property insurance.

Why utes are cheaper and bikes aren't cheap

Premiums track injury risk per class: goods vehicles claim slightly less than cars per vehicle ($483.75 vs $520.50), motorcycles carry higher injury severity for their numbers, and trailers — which injure almost no one on their own — pay just $18.35. Your obligations (and the recovery clause)

Report any injury crash through the Online Crash Reporting Facility, use the vehicle as declared on the licence, keep it roadworthy, and never drive unlicensed, unlicensed-as-a-driver or intoxicated. Breach those conditions and ICWA can pay the injured party — then recover every dollar from you. It's the quiet clause that makes an expired rego, covered in rego expiry WA, far riskier than the fine suggests.

Frequently asked questions

Is CTP included in WA rego?

Yes — WA calls it Motor Injury Insurance (MII), and it's collected with every vehicle licence. A licensed vehicle always has MII; an unlicensed one never does.

Who is the insurer?

The Insurance Commission of Western Australia (ICWA) underwrites the entire scheme. Unlike Queensland, there is no choice of insurer and no shopping around — one scheme, one premium per vehicle class.

How much is MII in 2026/27?

Per the official schedule: $520.50 for a Class 1A motor car, $483.75 for a Class 2 goods vehicle (utes), $342.95 for motorcycles and $18.35 for trailers and caravans, with GST and insurance duty applying per the schedule.

What does MII cover?

Injuries and death caused to others by any driver of the vehicle — compensation, care, treatment and rehabilitation — plus catastrophic injury care for anyone hurt in a WA crash where no driver was negligent. It never covers vehicle or property damage.

What are my obligations under MII?

Report injury crashes via the Online Crash Reporting Facility, keep the vehicle safe and used as declared, and never drive unlicensed or under the influence — breaches let ICWA recover the compensation it pays from you personally.
