Buying a vehicle? Duty applies too
On top of the running costs, vehicle licence duty is payable when a vehicle is licensed or transferred to you — 3% of dutiable value (capped at $12,000) for most light vehicles for most passenger vehicles, calculated on the dutiable value. It's a one-off, separate from the annual fees above; details in the transfer guide.
Frequently asked questions
How much is car rego in WA for 12 months?
It depends on tare weight. Using the official 2026/27 example: a 1,650 kg car pays $505.92 in weight-based licence fee plus the $6.60 flat fee = $512.52, then the $9.70 recording fee and Class 1A Motor Injury Insurance ($520.50 in the schedule, plus GST and insurance duty per the official schedule). Use the calculator for your exact weight.
Why does WA charge rego by weight?
Heavier vehicles cause more road wear, so WA prices the licence fee at $29.76 per 100 kg of tare (unladen) weight for cars, rounded up to the nearest 100 kg. Your tare weight is on the vehicle licence papers and compliance plate.
Is a ute cheaper or dearer than a car in WA?
The weight-based fee uses the same $29.76 per 100 kg rate for goods vehicles, but the MII class differs: a Class 2 goods vehicle is $483.75 in the 2026/27 schedule versus $520.50 for a Class 1A car — so at equal weight a ute's insurance component is slightly cheaper.
Does an EV pay less rego in WA?
Not automatically — the fee is weight-based regardless of fuel type, and EVs are often heavier than their petrol equivalents, which can make their rego dearer. There is no cylinder discount because WA doesn't use cylinders at all.
Can I pay for 3 or 6 months instead of 12?
Yes. Fees are charged pro-rata by term, with the flat fee apportioned ($3.30 for 3 months, $6.60 for 6) and a short-term MII fee of $5.44 applying to periods under 12 months. There is also a 1-month direct debit option with a $1.75 recording fee.
